“When the day was now far spent, His disciples came to Him and said, “This is a deserted place, and already the hour is late. 36 “Send them away, that they may go into the surrounding country and villages and buy themselves bread; for they have nothing to eat.” 37 But He answered and said to them, “You give them something to eat.” And they said to Him, “Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give them something to eat?” 38 But He said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” And when they found out they said, “Five, and two fish.” 39 Then He commanded them to make them all sit down in groups on the green grass. 40 So they sat down in ranks, in hundreds and in fifties. 41 And when He had taken the five loaves and the two fish, He looked up to heaven, blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to His disciples to set before them; and the two fish He divided among them all. 42 So they all ate and were filled.”
Mark 6:35-42
Out of all the miracles that Jesus preformed this one is recorded in all four gospels. And out of all the miracles recorded after Pentecost this one was never mentioned being duplicated in scripture.
It was a long day, folks were tired and hungry, but it so happened that they were in a location that was deserted. Unsatisfied with what they had, not enough money and not enough food, the disciples wanted to send the people away, but Jesus had other plans.
Jesus ask the disciples for what they had, and instructed them to organize the crowd and have them sit down. And before they knew it there was more leftover then what they started with.
Sometimes in the ministry we are like the disciples, unsatisfied with what we have to offer. Thinking or believing it’s not enough to meet the need, or we are not prepared for what’s ahead. All Jesus ask is that we bring what we have, and allow Him to perform the miracle of meeting the need of the people.
Five loaves, 2 fish, and FIVE THOUSAND people! How insane is that? Think about it, 5000 people, 2 little fish and 5 loaves of bread. Really! Let it sit right there and process it for a moment. How inadequate they must have felt. We can barely feed ourselves, how can we feed 5000!
Sometimes we can feel the same completely inadequate with what we have to bring. But hear this, all Jesus ask from us, is that we bring what we have, and He will do the rest.
He will take the simplest of gifting’s and turn it into a miracle of blessing for the multitudes.
Jesus loves you!
